Role Overview
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to help us build a different type of engineering team and culture at Ashby. Our engineering leaders think deeply about individual performance, process, and culture—not running sprint planning or driving product and technical decisions. You will focus on building your team, their skills to thrive with the ownership they are given, and an environment that empowers them to do their best work consistently, with little distraction.
Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Manage a growing team of engineers in Europe. For junior EMs, we try to stay within 6 direct reports to enable time for observing, correcting, praising, and coding.
- Hands-on Engineering: Engineering leaders at Ashby are great engineers and enjoy keeping their skills up-to-date while staying off the critical path. You will jump into systems and code to debug customer issues, ship small bug fixes, or improve developer experience.
- Mentorship: Grow engineers to the point where they can take large, loosely defined projects and deliver them with little intervention.
- Process & Product: Provide feedback on product and technical specs to help engineers identify where to cut scope or improve quality. You will influence and coach ICs to reach the right decisions rather than making them yourself.
- Culture: Foster an optimistic environment that embraces innovative engineers and gives them ownership over problems.
Company Culture
Ashby provides talent teams with intelligent and powerful software that automates or simplifies many of the tasks they are underwater with. Our engineering culture is motivated by the belief that a small, talented team, given the right environment, can build high-quality software fast and work regular hours. We prioritize deliberate communication and sacred focus time, allowing engineers to focus 36 out of 40 hours a week.
Benefits & Perks
- Competitive salary and equity.
- 10-year exercise window for stock options.
- Unlimited PTO, which we encourage you to take.
- Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget.
- $100/month education budget, with larger items like conferences covered with manager approval.
Requirements
- Technical Proficiency: You love being technical and can hold in-depth conversations with direct reports from infra to backend to frontend. You enjoy keeping your skills up-to-date.
- Management Passion: You enjoy management problems and get excited about driving people to be their best, giving difficult feedback, and building systems that make this easier.
- High Standards: You hold your team to a high standard and do not shy away from getting into the details and giving feedback.
- Communication: You are an excellent and empathetic communicator capable of facilitating change at both an individual and organizational level.
- Strategic Thinking: You know what exceptional engineers look like and have thought deeply about how to recruit and grow them.
- Autonomy: You thrive in high-trust, high-autonomy environments and are interested in building a team that can make the best decisions without you calling the shots.
- Tech Stack: While we do not require previous experience in our specific stack, we use: TypeScript (frontend & backend), https://jobeax.com/link/JSd7UYCSg572jJDY, React, Apollo GraphQL, Postgres, Redis.
